Failin’ Palin

Fail

GOP gimmick and NRA postergirl, Sarah Palin announced her resignation as Governor of Alaska yesterday.

Why?

Her resignation news conference didn’t say why; it sounded as it were written by Jonathan Clark Sullivan–rambling, incoherent, semi-retarded.

But here’s my fearless take: Palin is about to get hit by some scandal that would endanger or end her political career. She has elected to get out now and start generating money; she’ll be a big draw on the conservative lecture tour (Chuck Todd of NBC says she could command $100K per speech) and she could get lucrative book, cable TV or radio gigs. By the time the scandal ends, she could retire comfortably.

NRA-associated Minuteman Group Members Charged in Murders

Another day, another NRA-inspired act of domestic terrorism.

Story:

According to authorities, Forde and her two accomplices, Jason Eugene Bush and Albert Robert Gaxiola, broke into the home of Raul Flores and his family in Arivaca AZ on May 30th, apparently in the commission of a robbery. The invaders reportedly shot all three members of the Flores family who were present at the time, killing the father and daughter and leaving the mother wounded.

The little girl was 8 years old.

BTW, this “minuteman” group had ties to the TeaBaggers.

Shooting at DC’s Holocaust Memorial Museum

Looks like a twofer for the NRA, today.

White Supremacist kills guard at DC’s Holocaust Museum.

An elderly gunman known to authorities as a white supremacist fatally shot a private security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in downtown Washington today before being wounded by guards who returned fire, officials said.

Let’s see. Convicted felon. Able to get a gun, thanks to the NRA. White supremacist whose ‘literature’ was often sold at gun shows.

Why am I not surprised?

Guns, Fun, and Nazis

Dave Weigel of the Washington Independent visits a gunshow/machine gun shoot.

This is a place where vendors can sell T-shirts that read “The Fourth Reich: Obama-Biden 2012,” and “Hitler Gave Great Speeches Too..” and, most succinctly, “Fuck Obama.” It’s somewhere for people with hard-to-explain interests in World War II memorabilia can pick up items from Wehrmacht uniforms (”I’m putting the stuff together to make me a German officer,” says a man buying a Wehrmacht officer’s cap), Adolf Hitler mousepads (”Next time… no more Mr. Nice Guy”), and coffee mugs with Nazi commanders’ faces etched on them.

This leads to a certain skepticism of the media. Mark Stevens, whose Nazi merchandise is not moving very quickly on Saturday, declines to talk about it. “Any publicity from the media is bad publicity,” he explained.

An aberration? No. Go to most any gun show and Nazi literature and souvenirs are there.

The Effects of Heller

Remember the gun fetishists telling us how wonderful life would be after the Supreme Court ruled on Heller?

How different life would be? How everyone would have scads and scads of guns?

Well….

About nine months ago, the Supreme Court breathed new life into the Second Amendment, ruling for the first time that it protects an individual right to own guns. Since then, lower federal courts have decided more than 80 cases interpreting the decision, District of Columbia v. Heller, and it is now possible to make a preliminary assessment of its impact.

So far, Heller is firing blanks.

The courts have upheld federal laws banning gun ownership by people convicted of felonies and some misdemeanors, by illegal immigrants and by drug addicts. They have upheld laws banning machine guns and sawed-off shotguns. They have upheld laws making it illegal to carry guns near schools or in post offices. And they have upheld laws concerning concealed and unregistered weapons.

From Adam Winkler, UCLA School of Law:

To date, the federal courts have yet to invalidate a single gun control law for violating the Second Amendment right to bear arms, despite scores of cases. While some laws are sure to be invalidated in time, the new Second Amendment’s bark is far worse than its right. The greatest irony is that Heller’s logical flaws and inconsistencies improve the decision, making it more likely to endure and helping to cement a reasonable, not radical, right to bear arms.

Of course, Heller has had one impact. From the NY Times article:

There is one arguable exception to this trend. Two judges have struck down a part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, named after the murdered son of John Walsh, the host of the television show “America’s Most Wanted.” The act says that people accused of child pornography offenses must be prohibited from possessing guns while they await trial.

There we have it, folks. Heller helps suspected child pornographers!

“The Anchorage Daily News reported Friday that Sherry L. Johnston, 42, was arrested by Alaska State Troopers at her Wasilla home and charged with six felony counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance.

The arrest was the result of an “undercover narcotics investigation,” according to police.

Levi Johnston loves him some guns.

Where’s the NRA Love for Plaxico?

One would think the NRA would be loudly protesting the arrest of NYGiant WR and gunslinger Plaxico Burress. After all, the NRA has a long history of supporting gunloons who can’t be bothered with, y’know, observing the law.

For example, take Randy Weaver. Weaver was a white supremacist who illegally sold sawed-off shotguns. When he was to be arrested, he and his family shot and killed a federal marshall.

The NRA supported Weaver.

There was also David Koresh. Koresh was head of his own cult which involved child molestation and rape. When the feds tried to arrest him, he and his followers murdered several law enforcement agents.

The NRA supported Koresh.

Why not Plaxico?

Hmmm, what’s the difference between Randy Weaver, David Koresh and Plaxico Burress?

Plaxico Burress:

Plaxico Burress was hospitalized last night after a loaded gun he was carrying accidentally fired, causing injuries to his leg that are not life-threatening, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The incident is believed to have occurred at a club in New York City, where Burress was reportedly with several teammates, the source said. Earlier on Friday Burress had been declared out of Sunday’s game against the Redskins in Washington with a hamstring injury.
