Great Moments in NRA History

Anybody remember Y2K?

Planes were going to fall from the skies, whole electrical grids would go down, everybody’s financial records lost forever, etc.

The NRA:

A key marketing tool of the firearms industry is the “gun press,” in particular those magazines aimed at the retail gun buyer, such as Guns & Ammo and Gun World. Official National Rifle Association publications such as American Rifleman and American Guardian also play a key role. This “consumer gun press” has been relentless in its hype of a pending Y2K crisis, and the multitude of guns required to survive it. Articles in the gun press promote the same theory as the industry: to survive Y2K, it is vital to be well armed.

Magazine headlines illustrate the climate of fear the gun press promulgates in order to use Y2K to the industry’s advantage: “Y2K Survival Guide to Revolvers,” “Survive Y2K—Guns and Gear You Need,” and “Coping with the Upcoming Computer Collapse: Being Forewarned as Well as Forearmed Will Help You Survive the Coming Y2Kaos,” to name a just a few.4

No question about it, howler monkeys are smarter than NRA gunloons.

  1. Marketing doesn’t have anything to do with being rational, proportional, or even right.
Everybody loves to yell fire when they’re selling fire extinguishers.

    or …
Federal authorities can’t stop sales of guns — including military-style assault weapons — by dealers to known or suspected terrorists because of gaps in current law.

The Threat: There is government-documented evidence that terrorists have armed themselves with guns purchased in the U.S.

Urgency: This Terror Gap threatens our safety. We don’t want to wait until after a tragedy occurs. We can do something about it now.

Solution: Congress must pass the bill to Close the Terror Gap to stop known or suspected terrorists from buying guns.

  2. Jadegold the Guy Who Lies About Me Being a Liar: Pretty much everybody was of the mindset that you should hope for the best but be prepared for the worst when Y2K rolled around. Not sure why the NRA should have been any different.

And as Michael Hawkins points out, if anybody engages in pants shitting hyperbole around here, it’s the Brady loons.

Hey Jade you stated gun ownership was declining, can you show increased sales for 1999, from some source other than VPC or Brady?

  5. Sebastian the Lying Censor™: The fact is the NRA was predicting a cataclysmic event where the Govt and society would completely break down. Now–whether the NRA believes its own rhetoric is another matter; the fact remains they knew it would sell to their less than bright adherents.

  6. Jadegold the Guy Who Can’t Seem To Point To Anything I’ve Lied About: So fuckin what? Everybody was using Y2K to bang the preparedness drum and talking about armageddon. The Family Guy did a pretty funny episode about it. Why aren’t you griping about that? Everybody in the IT world was clamouring about it incessantly. Who cares?

It was seven years ago. You must really be scraping the bottom of the barrel.
