More Fun With Kleck’s DGUs

It’s almost like shooting fish in a barrel.

Again, we use Kleck’s own survey numbers and compare them with actual stats; hilarity ensues.

Kleck acknowledges there are some 550,000 gun crimes annually in the US. According to Kleck’s DGU ’study’, 18% of all DGUs involved an assailant who had a firearm.

Away we go to Mr. Calculator:

.18 (% of DGUs involving a gun-toting assailant) x 2.5M DGUs = 450,000 DGUs involving gun-toting assailant

450,000 DGUs involving gun-toting assailant/550,000 gun crimes annually = 82% of all gun crimes foiled by DGU.

Wow.

  1. Any cites for any of this?

    Not holding my breath.

  2. The cites are contained in Kleck’s own ’study,’ S the LC™. This is noted in my post.

  3. Which study? Sure you’re not cherry picking? Hint: he’s done more than one “study”.

  4. Even according to the very much overly conservative NCVS study that the antigunners love so much, 14% of violent crime victims are victims of crooks with guns. Nobody really doubts that there are at least 500K gun crimes per year (since crime tends to get underreported anyway). The NCVS study that the gun control whackjobs love so much will even tell you that about 14% of violent crime victims face offenders with guns.

Seeing as about half of American homes own guns…why is it so hard to believe that that lots of people who commit gun crimes get confronted by others with guns?

  5. The other thing you’re missing, shitbreath: the DGU often PREVENTS THE CRIME FROM HAPPENING IN THE FIRST PLACE, thus reducing the total number of crimes actually reported. Crime tends to be underreported anyway, and DGUs reduce the total number of crimes substantially. When Joe Idiot tries to break in my house but doesn’t steal shyte because I scare him away with my Glock…no burglary is reported, you fucking maroon.

So in other words…all your handwringing trying to suggest that the DGUs can’t happen as often as Kleck claims because they represent too much of the total crimes reported is nonsense. Your argument is based on ignoring some very basic facts about the stats you’re trying to lob around–namely the fact that DGU prevents crime from happening in the first place.

  6. Quote Jade
“450,000 DGUs involving gun-toting assailant/550,000 gun crimes annually = 82% of all gun crimes foiled by DGU”
If it was prevented then there is not a reported crime, In other words what you are saying is there are 1 million attempted gun crimes per year, & 45% are detered or stopped.

  7. Negative, JDFAR. Kleck is saying there are 550K gun crimes a year. Using his own DGU methodology, 82% are stopped by a DGU. Of course, common sense tells us this is ridiculous.

  8. Firstly, he isn’t saying that there are 550K gun crimes. Secondly, you’re ignoring the fact that DGUs prevent gun crimes, thus your analysis is fatally flawed.

    You really are an idiot.

  9. That’s it Jade you play pretend all you want, at the number of readers you have you’ll soon be playing with yourself. If you do get up north, don’t bother to stop in.

  10. JDFAR: Why on earth would I want to stop in? To buy a stuffed gopher or something?
