GunLoons Abysmally Ignorant of Guns

One quick way to discern a GunLoon is the fact they actually know very little about firearms.

Case in point: our very own Muay Thai expert, Sebastian:

“SKSs are actually quite commonly used for target shooting and hunting.”

Nope. A real hunter or target shooter would never consider an SKS for either task. An SKS simply hasn’t the accuracy. A person who is using an SKS to hunt or target shoot is using the wrong tool for the job. It is akin to using a wrench to hammer a nail; it can be done but the results are likely going to be poor.

  1. Whose knowledge are you discerning anything about? Anyone with a google window open can spend about ten seconds searching the Internet and realize that in point of fact, SKSs are actually quite popular for brush game, small varmints, and wooded area hunting where shots are taken at 100yds or less, and long range accuracy isn’t an issue.

Who the fuck are you to say who a “real hunter” is anyway?

  2. why on earth couldn’t you use an SKS for target shooting? Sure, they’ve got a bigger MOA than a match grade rifle, but with most starting shooters that doesn’t make a difference because their own accuracy is below that of the rifle. And they’re exactly the kind of people who buy those entry-level rifles.

On another note: Do you know of any criminal shooting where an SKS was used?

  3. Although I did’nt win, I did place in several matches with a standard SKS, known several others that started with SKS’s, that shot quite well. Most hold at 2 inches, which is about as good as an out of the box bolt gun.

  5. Then all those makers of SKS hunting accessories have gone out of business?

  6. JDFAR: You must have been competing against the blind.

Jay: As I noted, you can attempt to make an SKS into something approximating a hunting rifle. You can also spend a lot of $ doing so but the fact remains that after all the mods you’ll wind up with a poor excuse for a hunting rifle. A real hunter would spend the money buying a real hunting rifle.
    ……
You can dump a lot of bucks into making your Kia look like a BMW. But, in the end, you’re just going to have a tricked-out Kia.

  7. “SKSs are actually quite commonly used for target shooting and hunting.”

    “Nope.”

“you can attempt to make an SKS into something approximating a hunting rifle.”

So many people are making their SKS rifles into “something approximating a hunting rifle,” to the extent of supporting many makers of SKS hunting accessories, but SKSs are NOT used hunting, huh?

“A real hunter would spend the money buying a real hunting rifle.”

So you have been appointed arbiter of what is a “real hunting rifle”? I suspect (and rejoice) that the position has no real power at all.

And if one can’t “spend the money” for your “real” gun — too bad, eh?

  8. BTW — I am STILL curious as to your definition of guns to be banned that would include the SKS.

  9. Jay,
It’s funny, isn’t it? He seems to think that he knows what makes a real hunting rifle…even though he A) doesn’t hunt and B) doesn’t realize that lots of people do in fact hunt with them…so I guess they’re not really real hunters eh? I guess the deer and brush game they shoot with SKS’s aren’t really dead :) .

  10. Hmm I think I get it: An SKS was not meant to be used as a hunting rifle, so it is irrelevant to cite that as a use.

Assault rifles were not ment to be used in spree killings, so then it is irrelevant to say that criminals do use them for that purpose …
